Everything you ever wanted to know about the Kampar peninsula - including photos.
Look up latest bulletin article on Kampar.
The Forestry Ministry has cautiously welcomed a decision by Riau Police to stop investigations into 13 forestry companies allegedly responsible for illegally logging 2 million cubic meters of forest, asking police to continue looking into firm owners’ actions.

According to Euroweek, APRIL’s US$200 million five year loan closed in November 2007, fully subscribed via sole bookrunner Credit Suisse. Mandated lead arrangers are Fortis, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, Standard Bank and West LB. As this photo from Greenpeace shows, this is bad news.
Euroweek, Issue: 1032 - 29 November 2007
“Turning just one Sumatran province’s forests and peat swamps into pulpwood and palm oil plantations is generating more annual greenhouse gas emissions than the Netherlands and rapidly driving the province’s elephants into extinction, a new study by WWF and partners has found.”
Unfortunately, the report doesn’t just document the emissions caused by clearing Riau’s forests and converting them to industrial tree plantations. Being WWF, they want to work with the industry to develop “solutions”. These include trading carbon from “avoided deforestation”, which could, according to WWF, “provide a good future for Indonesia’s forest industry, provided solid policies are issued to encourage the commercialization of environmental services, such as avoiding deforestation, water and soil protection and biodiversity conservation.”
Instead of being fined for destroying vast areas of forest and the livelihoods of Sumatra’s local communities, APP and APRIL the main culprits, stand to make a profit - by establishing monocultures of industrial tree plantations on what WWF calls “waste” land.
