“A new grant of just under $1 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will allow N.C. State University scientists to grow genetically modified trees across North Carolina and use them to produce ethanol cheaply. The special trees, developed by Vincent Chiang, professor of forestry and environmental resources at NCSU, have shown multiple benefits in greenhouses. They grow faster and have more cellulose and up to 50 percent less lignin than normal trees. Cellulose is chemically converted into ethanol; lignin - the glue that helps hold a tree together - makes extracting cellulose more difficult.”
